AbstractThis work shows an investigation on the relationships between optical and Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) data. Optical images were fraction images derived from Thematic Mapper bands after Linear Unmixing Spectral Model. The objective was to improve understanding about SAR capabilities for deforestation detection and mapping. Preliminary results pointed to an increased discrimination of land cover in the study area, as shown in the literature, for the L band (used by the SAR onboard Japanese Earth resources Satellite JERS-1) data. Soil-fraction image presented the higher correlation with SAR data (JERS-1 and RADARSAT-1). Further studies will focus on the correlation of optical and SAR data using SAR images acquired with different parameters.
